Director Micheal Edwards said there’s a direct link between this year’s reduction and Operation Safe Streets, a 2006 agency initiative that was revived in October. It injects extra manpower into neighborhoods beset by violent crime.
He said Safe Streets pinpointed 12 high-crime areas, which he wouldn’t disclose, and flooded those locations with about 40 to 60 additional uniformed officers.
