Military recruiters routinely visit schools to discuss careers offers in the armed forces. They hold various stage demonstrations and also hand out gifts from T-shirts to doughnuts. The 2001 'No Child Left Behind' Act of states that all public schools receiving government funds must give the military access to students' personal information, including home phone numbers. Schools that do not comply can lose federal funding.

Generally these military recruiters do not make the students aware of the dangers of the Military Lifestyle . They just project it as an adventure with fun and discipline. Some schools also make it mandatory for their students to attend the Military recruitment programs. Though parents have a legal right to disallow the military from contacting their children. However, not all schools make parents aware of that right.

Sources say that the Military has been losing out a lot due to the American involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. Hence, they need the workforce. Also, they offer a good pay and college education. However, they need to make kids aware what they are getting into apart from all the goodies that they offer. Some experts say that the child should be old or mature enough to take the decision about joining the military rather having them deciding at a young age when they cannot determine the consequences of their decision.

Some schools have also went ahead and announced that public schools are not a place for military recruiters. Over the time some parents have also realized that tax money spent for the Iraq war is money not spent on children's educations or other domestic needs.

Army has also included many tactics to get in more enlistment. Apart from offering citizenship quickly, they also lure the students with openings in various good sectors apart from the combat jobs of the army, payment of college education and many other subsidies.

However, the daily images of violence from Iraq are scaring away potential recruits for the service. When parents read about the latest bomb blast or ambush that killed American soldiers, skepticism has grown within them to avoid their child from such a fatal career.

The declining job market may probably help the Military recruiter to complete their enlistment targets. But with the wave of terrorist attacks and deteriorating life of soldiers in Iraq, so many possible recruits may give the Military career a pass.

In order to make the cut for the GI Jobs magazine?s list, honorary schools must be in the top 15% of all colleges, universities, and trade schools nationwide for America?s military veteran, reserve, and active duty students.

Hawai?i Pacific University provides military veteran, reserve, and active duty students classes through the Military Campus Programs on all Oahu military installations. Now I know that the Seattle Public Schools aren?t alone in their challenges of how to educate these children. But the reason it attracted my attention was because of a recent NPR (National Public Radio) segment on educating children with autism. What struck me was the similarity in the Seattle Schools attempt to educate its gifted population and its special needs population.

It left me with the burning question: are all Seattle Schools? students really special needs students? Well, think about it. One of the hottest topics in educational pedagogy is multiple intelligences. That?s the belief that people have academic intelligence, emotional intelligence, kinesthetic (movement) intelligence, and other specific intelligences. And more importantly, that schools should teach in ways that reach children who learn best in all these different ways.

So the fact that a gifted child in the Seattle Schools requires a different sort of challenge to motivate him, or that an autistic child needs a different environment to facilitate learning, really means they both have special needs. And if a ?regular ed? child is an auditory learner, while her classmate is a visual learner; well, aren?t those special needs as well?

What Do Special Needs Students Require from the Seattle Schools?

Frankly, I don?t think that many teachers in the Seattle Schools would argue with my characterization of all children as having special needs. In fact, the best teachers I know strive to individualize instruction in classes with 30 or more students. Of course, one issue is that the resources of the Seattle Schools, while better than most of the nation, are never enough. But the other, and I think easier issue to tackle, is one of knowledge. There?s still a lot of disagreement among parents and educators about the best ways to teach classically labeled ?gifted and special needs? students.

Inclusion is often seen as the most desirable option for special needs students, but many a parent will tell you that ideal is often a frustrating reality. One of the best things that the Seattle Schools can do today to make future education better is to track the success of students in different special needs environments. Since the children are required to be in public schools classes, it only makes sense to track their progress in the different venues. Again- cost rears its ugly head. But the Seattle Schools are fortunate to have some powerful corporations and higher learning institutions helping them out with a variety of initiatives.

The bottom line is that it doesn?t matter whether a child?s ?special needs? are extreme or not. The Seattle Schools are going to have to find ways to address them.

As every parent knows, each child is different. What works for one may not work for another. There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to education. Some children need to be nurtured while others need to be challenged. Some children thrive under military school discipline while others would wither and fail. Parents need to ask themselves if their child would do better in a large school or a small school. Does the child have special interests or needs? Only with the answers to questions like these can parents select the best school for their child.

School review sites provide parents with a forum where they can learn about each school's philosophy of education and any special programs they might offer. School profiles gives parents access to the information needed to make the best choice. How is literacy developed at each school? What physical education and extracurricular activities are offered? The best sites offer viewers an opportunity to post their own personal reviews. Each addition to this kind of knowledge base provides parents with the information they need to make an informed decision about where their child will succeed academically.

Each parent knows what works best for their child. School review sites make the information parents need about schools more easily accessible and empower them to make the best decision possible for their child's education.
